#66, "August 29, 1999 Santa Margarita Lake"

Matt and I made an afternoon run to the lake today fishing from 2pm and getting out at about 6. I had some ideas on how we might catch some fish based on recent trips so first we went to the flats area across from white oak to fish some jerkbaits. Matt fished a bass assasin and fished and STI jerkbait. We worked the area pretty slowly but were only rewarded with one small fish which I caught on the jerkbait. It got kinda windy and I wanted to try my other idea which was worm fishing up on the walls in the narrows so we motored up there. Matt fished an angler's choice 4" worm on a darthead and I fished a small green/clear paddle tail. We worked slowly down the rocks and Matt landed a nice on about 2.5 on the darthead rig. This was the only lovin on the worm though and we picked away at them for a while with no further bites. As we came around to where it opens up in the back of the narrows I reached for the swimbait rod with a brown/tan 5" big hammer. Fishing out pretty far from the wall in 12 feet of water I connected on a decent one about a pound and a half. We're working down the bank and Matt makes this cast out into open water with a big deep diving crank. He starts getting excited and I'm like what? what? I thought he had a fish on but what had happened was that he was bumping structure out in the open water. I turned around and fired a few casts out towards the bouys that run down the middle of the channel. Bingo, another pound and a half type fish. We metered around out there looking for more structure for a while and found some small areas but they were difficult to locate so we turned around and worked back out of the narrows. I had a nice bite again in open water and brought a 2.5 to the boat. They were out there but difficult to locate. That was our last fish and we headed in. My advice would be to look for outside structure and get down to 'em. I was running my swimbait right along the bottom in 12 to 15 of water when the bites came.
