#63, "Lake Mead"

My traveling partner and friend, Dan Frazier, and I had a fun four day pre-fish last weekend. We launched Friday a.m. from Las Vegas Marina and started at that end of the lake. We got into a nice school of bass chasing bait not too far from Vegas Marina. I had one come off that was likely better than three pounds. Overcast sky and rain seemed to prolong the topwater bite. We fished down in the Boulder Basin for most of the morning and early afternoon to get a feel for that end of the lake. Good quality fish down there, little better than two pound average, if you can get 'em to eat!! We fished some steep stuff deep, and found a wonderful concentration of fish. Some solid fish too, two's and two's and a halfs!! We camped out around Middlepoint after a disappointing evening topwater session. Great pork ribs and cocktails!!! We fished around T-bar Saturday morning without anything profound to say about that area. I did catch a nice fluke fish though in site of the T-Bar. I swear I cast the fluke into the fish's mouth. It was an instant take!!! We re-supplied at T-Bar and headed back out. We got back into 'em past T-Bar, but not quite sandy point!!!!Saturday night Dan and I nearly were swamped in our sleep by a gnarly storm. Two-three foot wind swell came up and over his beached Ranger. Horrible wind and rain followed for about 45 min. We launched, emergency style, l lost my sleeping bag and sandals, and we chewed up Dan's nice stainless prop!!!!!We were totally soaked and so was everything in the boat. We survived on whiskey and good humor!!!The next morning we headed to Pierce Ferry. We looked like the laundry boat with all our stuff drying out!!! We cranked up lots of small fish up there. Cooler water and lots of little bucks tearing up bait. That end of the lake is somewhere I'd like to spend time in the future. Between the current, water temp, and distance from Calville, that end is fairly wide open to open minded fisherman!!!!There has to be some big girls around and they seem like they might eat a reaction bait or a jig. The current would position them and a good fisherman would know what tide, temp, and season does to those fish. The water was 10 degrees cooler there than around sandy point!!!!Lots of variables, but it beats fishing off points for a small limit!!!Lake Mead is a great tournament lake, we figure ten pounds a day for three days in the Open will place high...I'm predicting Frazier will take a top three finish, and if he gets a couple big bites, he'll win!!! <BR>
