Yes folks, Santa Margarita Lake again, can you believe it! As ususal got to the lake around 5:30, proceeded to shoot the breeze with Dean at the Marina for a bit and decided we woudld go out on his boat in an hour. I dragged my battery down to the boat and fished the marina cove in the interim. Threw a buzzbait down the bank and then switched to a 5.5 inch green sardine fish trap. First cast on the point in tha back and thwap I'm bit but when I set the hook all I hear is drag giving. Forgot to set the drag before casting! Needless to say I farmed that one. That was the only bite in the marina cove. Dean and I launched his Nitro around 6:30 and buzzed up past Salsipuedes. Must have been a first cast thing because I landed a 2-5 on the first toss onto a small point. Dean said I jinxed us for sure by getting on right away and for the next hour it seemed like as we tried poppers, buzzbaits, the swimbaits, etc for nada lotta. Then around 8 I had a tap tap but didn't connect. A few casts later it went wide open. In the next 25 minutes I landed 4 of 6 bites on fish from 2lb to a nice one that looked over 3lb for the few seconds I saw it as I bounced it onto the deck and clear off the other side of the boat as it fell off the hook. Catch and release has never been easier! I think I was distracting Dean because he just couldn't get bit for some reason. I caught all my fish on a 5" brown/clear big hammer, 3/4 oz head on main lake walls. Thats the word from Margarita for the day.
