#56, "August 12, 1999 Santa Margarita Lake"

Today I got to the lake a little earlier than usual around 3:30pm. I have been reading some really good articles about jig fishing over at Northern California Bass Fishing's Anglers Library. Andy Cuccia's articles are especially interesting if you take the time to read them. http://www.ncbf.com/lib/cooch1.html http://www.ncbf.com/lib/lowtide.html
There's two to check out but anyway...
I was motivated to flip a jig so I tied on a brown/orange proline jig 3/8 oz with a christmas tree color twintail yamamoto grub trailer. I started off in Jackass canyon and right away spooked a nice fish out in about 8 feet of water. Next flip and the line sorta quivered so I slammed it and brought in a nice 3lb 3oz bass. Talk about instant results. Well as is often the case this was the only fish that wanted to eat the jig despite flippin my way through the rest of the cove. Hmmmmmm. Thinking I would just fall back to the swimbait bite I headed threw that on my way out of the cove and only had one bite which was a small fish that got off at the boat. With that I went back to the marina cove and figured I'd start going through my boxes and trying different things. I started out by throwing a 5" olive big hammer and experimenting with the retrieve. No luck there. Then I threw a spinnerbait then a crank with no joy there either. Next out came the tourney frog which produced three bites in some cheese in toward the back but they all missed it by a foot or more. Then it was back to the swimbait then a spook etc etc etc etc. Well I didn't do crap except for to farm a couple on the swimbaits.
Best catch of the day came when I was pulling the boat in and I see a crawdad claw coming out of a hole in the mud. Using my oar I dug out this huge female craw and brought it home to put in my fish tank. Nice.
