#51, "August 4, 1999 Santa Margarita Lake"

Well today was another solo trip to the late and once again I got up there late around 6:45pm. After catching that fish yesterday on a swimbait I came prepared today with my 9' 6" sabre 190. Well this turned out to be a wee bit too much rod for a lake like Santa Margarita, so after a few casts I tied my 5" fish trap on to my 7' 10" loomis on 17lb. This felt about right. I started in white oak and after about 10 minutes I landed back to back 2 pounders in about 15 feet of water. Working the sides of the small points I landed three more bass in the next hour or so. One at 2-15, one at 2-6 and the other around 2lb. They seemed to be holding in in 15-20 feet of water about 20-40 feet out from the shore. The bites were agressive but I missed a couple. At 8:00 I moved over to Jackass canyon for the last 1/2 hour. Right away I landed a 2 pounder. Then it was slow until I started working the sides of the cove towards the back. On two casts I landed one around 3lb that I didn't weigh and lost another about the same size when it jumped. By then it was dark and time to head in. <BR>Talking to some of the other lake regulars back at the marina it sounded like the bite was generally pretty good. Dave nailed a 5 pounder in the morning on a popper along with a pair of 3's in the evening on jigs. Austin reported catching 4 on the gizzard shad. All around good fishing and hey, if you have some plastics take 'em with you up there and give it a go.
