#39, "July 14, 1999 Santa Margarita Lake"

Today I thought I would so something I don't often do which is fish the narrows. We motored our way up there around 6:30 and found that the following. The water up there is very murky and shallow. People have fished the daylights out of it with the tourney frogs as evidenced by all the lines drawn through the weeds. And last of all there are a ton of people up there (like every boat in the damn lake). Oh and by the way, it sucked up there and we didn't get a bite....
So now for the real report. We moved back down the lake to salsipuedes bay. First five minutes, three bass cranking all about 12". From there it was basically wide open as freshwater bass fishing can be. We wound up with about 15 fish landed between us. They were mostly 10-14" but Matt a nice 2 something and I had three from 2 to 2.5 pounds. And this was all between 7:30 and 9pm! We caught most of the fish including all of the 2 pounders on speed traps in chrome/black and chrome/blue. Matt also got 6 or 7 on a white rattle trap.
Back at the docks we heard the following....
The topwater bite sucked.
Some buzzbait fish but they were missing it more often than connecting.
Good bite on the Castaic Gizzard Shad.
Note to self: Buy one of these.
Man my wrist is getting sore lately. See you on the water =)
