#3502, "March 30, 2002 - San Pablo"

Summer and I went to San Pablo today. Got there around 11am and fished until 5:45pm. Nicolo was there in the preserve when I got there but he hadn't seen anything really. I went looking all over the preserve and never saw a single fish either. Well since they had to be somewhere nearby, I backed off and threw cranks, ripbaits, and plenty of trout lures out deeper. Not a darn thing for the first few hours except one maybe bite on a jig. I worked my way down the lake throwing trouts ... still nothing. Finally I spotted a fish about 3lbs under a log, I pitched my jig in there and the fish moved down after it, picked it up but I missed it somehow. Hmm. Finally started to see some fish basking up shallow around 3 or 4pm. Mostly small fish. I was throwing the kitchen sink, the couch, and the chair at them at that point, the fish just didn't want to bite today. I think the water warmed up so fast that they haven't adjusted to it yet. I saw this last year at Shadow Cliffs and I've seen the same thing a couple other places as well. I basically knew it was hopeless when I saw those fish sunning themselves up top. I did, after a bit, see two toads together up sunning. One of them was probably 13lbs or so. The other was a little smaller. I anchored and deadsticked my generic on them for 15 minutes. Got bored, pulled anchor and went over to see if they were even there anymore. They had moved off 100 feet away. Hopeless. If I had a TV, I'd have thrown that at this point. Sheesh ... Well the weather at least was beautiful. The place was a zoo with trout fishermen and the trout fishing was just wide open. If we had this weather with better water clarity and the fish were on beds ... let's just say yeah, it would be on. Next time.

Summer snapped this pic of a 3lber. Looked like a female. If you look close you can see the chair sinking next to it. Nevermind ...
