#304, "May 21, 2000 Santa Margarita Lake"

So on Monday it was wintertime again but today, wow was it hot. Must have been 95 at the lake. Summer and I headed out at 2pm or so. We started where I'd missed a big bite on Monday and about 5 minutes later, I'm throwing the 9" stocker trout and this lit up 5 fish rushes out and attacks it. With 2 trailer hooks you'd think you get the fish but it didn't get hooked despite having the bite crosswise in it's mouth. Unbelievable!! As I'm reeling in the cast 2 more 3 pounders gave chase but didn't hit it. So that got me going but fishing around the area more only resulted in 2 and 3 pounders following but not biting. So I did what I do every once and a while when I forget that I always do bad in the narrows, which is to go up there and give it another shot. Threw the 7" slammer, threw the tourney frog on the cheeze and the sammy over the grass. Didn't get touched for about 2 hours. I hate the narrows...
So we went back to the marina to get some water and fish around there. Went to some of my favorite water in the marina cove and threw the 7" MS Slammer. Threw out a long cast and got nailed solid. Dragged the fish trough the weeds and boated a nice one. 4lbs 14oz on the scale and beautiful fish. Took photos and on the next cast I stuck a 3 in almost the same spot. Worked the rest of the marina cove for another 2 and a half on the 7" slammer. At 6pm we called it a day. I would suspect that the evening topwater was great but didn't have time to check it out. As usual Summer did a great job on the photography although she didn't get one, she did hook one in the marina on a fluke. I love Santa Margarita lake.
Photography a-la Summer
The good one

Another nice shot of the same fish (very healthy this time of year).

The 3lber.
