#11962, "Trout Hunting Cachuma Lake 12/28"

I had the pleasure of joining Captn. Larry Heron aboard the Calico Hunter III for some trout fishing. We arrived at the lake to an iced over dock & some seriously cold air but very little wind. Larry ran to the south end of the lake before sending out 2 trap rigged 3" Big Hammer's on his side of the boat. I'll let him tell us what colors he was using but I do remember he seemed to have the Pepper Trout out most of the time. I started out with a 3" Rainbow Trout Hammer & a Rainbow Trout Pinns Minnow. After watching Larry put a few fish on:

& my Hammer get hit 3 times for only one short strike on the Pinns Minnow I switched it out for a Mirror Shad which caught one fish in a very long period when the swimbait rods were going off left & right. I replaced that with a Steve's Shad which turned out to be one of the hot colors along with Pearl. What really stood out for me was how many times the trout would come back for the swimbait after hitting it, I've never seen this with a hard bait. Pretty much every time a Hammer was bit Larry would put the boat in neutral & the fish would come back for the bait, usually until it was hooked:

Some of the fish came back as many as 6 times. As the day went on I got a little better at taking advantage of the trout's love for rubber. After a short strike I would pick up the rod & do slow "sweeping" motions with the rod, dropping the swimbait back then pulling it faster which would generate another strike. The fish would come back many times then when I felt steady pressure Set It. The way these trout would hold onto the bait was amazing often it felt like I was feeding them a nightcrawler.

Once again we nearly met Larry's projected fish count of 30 trout. If we weren't so worried about holiday traffic we could have easily done it. I think we ended up with 27 or 28 with only one pink meated fish coming home with me due to a torn gill:

Thanks again Larry for the invite! You seem to know Cachuma Lake as well as you know Santa Cruz Island.
