#102, "November 4, 1999 Santa Margarita Lake"

Is it November already? Well as reported the lake received 500 pounds of trout today at the main ramp. There were a half dozen trout anglers down there with some getting limits but others only getting a few. The trout were decent sized, looked like 11 and 12 inchers. I tied on the 7" AC Minnow and went for the bass. Connected quickly with a litte guy about a pound and a half. Proceeded to work the marina cove for a while and got another one about 2 and a half that came off a finger of weed growth out into the main lake. I tried the area where I caught the 5-8 last week but no action there. Then I motored up to Vaca flats, fished there for nothing, then jackass canyon for nothing, then back to the white oak ramp where I switched to a 5" swimbait and farmed one bite. So it wasn't exactly wide open but the conditions were less than ideal with clear skies and calm water. After a bit I figured I'd just head back to the marina cove and see if any stripers might materialize to chow on the planters. Picked up a 2 pound bass instead, again on the AC Minnow then broke out the 30 pound gear and decided to toss the big castaic hard-bait trout. Did that for quite a while with no action or sign of stripers. Also talked to Craig Jacobson who caught the lake record striper a few years back. He had one bite on the MS Slammer but he figured it was a bass. At about 5pm I headed across the lake to hit up this little cove and managed another 2 pounder on the minnow once again. This one hit on a very fast retrieve, don't know why I was reeling it so fast but the second I paused it, wham that little sucker nailed it. Then back to the marina cove for the last 20 minutes for nothing. Oh well, the bass fishing was pretty good but if there's one word to describe the remaining stripers in Margarita its "elusive!" I know there are still some in there and they are big but if someone didn't catch one every year or so, you'd never know it. Next time!
