#9484, "Eastern Sierra Opener 4-26-03"

This was my first Eastern Sierra Trout Opener, and I think I got spoiled. The weather was pretty darn good except for the wind and cold nights. I believe Tom's thermometer read in at 30 degrees or so Saturday morning before sunrise. I had met up with Tom Hansen and his nephews and we all had a great time. Also there wasn't as many people as what I expected.

We started fishing at Intake 2, and from all of the reports of tons of fished stocked in here, it was a no brainier. Well to make a long story short, it was cold, and poor fishing while we were there. We did catch a few, but none of any size, and talking to other anglers later in the day, it was hit or miss here.

Next we went down to the South Fork of Bishop Creek, and got into a nice bite. Tom had a few nice fish around a pound and a half, and I had 1 about the same. There was one guy fishing there that had a nice three to four pounder.

After going back to camp and meeting up with Sloper/Joe, we went down to Lower Rock Creek. We found a nice school of fish under one bridge and it was one after another. All were smaller DFG stockers, but they were fish.

For the final stop of the day we went to Convict Lake and Creek. The action was hot here for smaller fish as well. I started out on the jetty with one of Tom's nephews and we got lots of fish on bouyants. We then walked down to the creek to find tom, but instead we found a jerk. The guys didn't want us to even look into his pool of small 6" trout! I had a few choice words for him, and we went downstream. There we found another school of fish in the 1 pound range. We caught a couple then went back to the jetty to finish the day. When we got back it was on till the sun set behind the mountains. It was almost a fish or a hit on every cast on lures. As we were leaving my last fish was a trout just about 3 pounds.

All in all it was a great time. Tom was very generous and fun to fish with, along with his nephews. We all had a great time, and I know I'll be back next year for the opener. I caught and released over 50 trout for the opener. Here is a picture of my last trout of the day.
