#7491, "San Luis Stripers 12-29, 12-30"

After a pretty good day Saturday, I went out myself Sunday to see if the bite was a fluke. No fluke - I missed one with a jigging spoon, but trolled up 6 fish, 1 at 10.4lbs with the other 5 ranging from 4 to 5lbs. I finally kept the last 4.6lber and called it a day.

I felt bad that my Dad couldn't make the trip Sunday, so I took a sick day and took him out today, with the hope of hooking him up with a 10lb+ fish. He got solid hit right off the bat, but the knot on the trailer hook of his swim bait pull free and the fish was gone...( yes, I rigged the bait). Although he missed 1 other fish, the 4 he got in the boat (10.2, 10.8, 9.6, and 7.4) made up for the 2 lost fish.

The last 3 days have been a great way to end the year, while I wait for the water to clear at Coyote. I guess I can't fish tomorrow since I somehow lost my fishing licence on the ride back to ramp. But, New Years day is looking like a good time to break in the 2003 licence.

Wade - A lot of people are catching fish out there. Most of them are drifting minnows. We saw 2 guys limit out in about 15 minutes...their boat ride, out and back, probably took longer. I'm basically fishing in Portuguese cove in water that ranges from 30' to 50' deep. I'm running my lines down at 15' to 25', and bumping my trolling speed every few minutes. The standard lures, spoonbill rebels and Sassy Shad type swim baits are working for us. My buddy and his wife also limited today, trolling - fish ranged from 5 to 11 lbs. If you ask me, the trick is to rely on your depth sounder to find the fish (just like trolling for trout) as they seem to be roaming about looking for food. The last 3 days I actually fished 3 different parts of the cove. I have to imagine that the guys that really know what their doing are bringing in some really big brutes! I did pull a Slammer and a AC shinner, but I don't think these fish know what a rainbow trout is.
