#7017, "Lake Poway"

Hey all...

I just wanted to post a little report on Lake Poway. We were out there yesterday from opening until about 1pm. Initially we were facing some really tough conditions. I live in Los Angeles, and the lake, for those of you who don't know, is in San Diego. The night before leaving, we had the hardest rain in probably a year. It was certainly coming down in buckets. Well...as a determined angler and host of the first annual South Bay Community Church Fall Trout Derby, I was bound and determined to get out there. Well, at 4am, with about 20+ participants in tow, we made the hour and a half drive out to the lake and set up for a scratchy but enjoyable day of fishing. It threatened to rain all morning but as the sun came up, the clouds broke up and we enjoyed a crisp but rainless fall morning.

Well, the fishing started really slow. No one, including all boaters and shore fishermen were blankin out! After an hour or so, one fish, then another, then another. One from shore, one from a boat, and one off the fishing dock where we set up our fish camp. It never turned wide open but after another hour or so, we finally got the setup down and put everyone on it. We fished medium sized clear bubbles, 5' of 2lb flourocarbon leader, a #10 Owner mosquito hook, and either an orange power worm, a chartruse power worm, or an orange power trout craw (something new I picked up the day before). We had 10 kids out there all throwin the same thing and hooking their own fish! It was great! To see those kids all excited as the fish would pull line!!!! Amazing!

We also had several people rent boats and take them all over that little lake for basically nothing! I believe all the fish came from the fishing dock with the exception of one or two. We ended the day with 20 fish for around 20 fishermen, women, and kids. It turned out to be a great day as most of those who got skunked were the old guys like myself who think we know it all. You just gotta love taking kids fishing...and to top it off, teaching them all how to fish with artificial baits!

Well, plenty of fish, prizes, food, and smiles! We had a great, safe, and blessed trip!

Darin
