Friday was our last fishing day at the lake. My Dad and I hit up Rancheria while the girls went horse back riding. We had a better idea of where the fish were after Monday's fishing and a lot of the good spots on the bank were open too. We drifted eggs again and we basically caught the you know what out of the trout. Between the two of us we had over 25 fish in 3 hours of fishing. Most of the fish were 8 to 14 inch planters. We caught three or four 8 and 9 inch fish that were full finned and towards the end I fooled a very nice 13 inch fish that had absolutely gorgeous native type coloring to it. We took a few pics of that one (below) and carefully released it along with all the other fish.
The key was to use 4lb test with 2 medium, or 3 small split shot, and most importantly a #12 or #14 red Gamakatsku hook. This is the first time we used the Gamakatsku hooks for trout fishing and it made a huge difference. We caught most of the fish that bit, and by setting right away, we lip hooked at least 90% of the trout. The other key was to cast upstream and let it drift naturally with the current. Not to be a braggart, but there were at least 10 other people around us who caught a grand total of 1 trout while we caught 25. The main mistake people would make was casting out and then letting their line lay against the shore down current. As soon as it gets down current, just reel in and cast again.
There's lots of fun trouting to be had in the Huntington area. It was nice to do some fishing where you could just go out and catch a whole bunch of fish without having to work very hard. Especially after getting skunked 2 weeks bass fishing in San Diego :-)
Next week we're going to Mammoth Lakes for more trouting, hiking, etc. Should be fun :-)
