#368, "Bass-n-Tubes Middle River report"

The Delta Middle River tournament is always a fun tournament and this round proved it again. There were 20 tubers and kick-boaters, I think the most ever? Launch was at 5:45. I walked down the levee towards the bridge a ways before putting in. The tide was pretty strong outgoing. I threw a buzzbait and flipped jig in the morning for an hour for nothing. Finally switched to a Mann's mid 1- and caught one 3rd cast about 2 and half pounds. Missed another one a few minutes later and then caught another smaller fish. I was working shallow flats mostly around wood. The next fish, I threw the crank off a tree and I don't know if it even hit the water and pow the fish blew up on it, another 2 something. That was pretty cool. The tide was going out so I switched to a buzzbait and they went for that too. I picked up another keeper, missed a fish twice, then caught a dink and came back to the one I had missed and caught it. That made a limit and a few minutes later I culled one again on the buzzbait. It was only 8:30am but the tide was getting low and the bite slowed for me after that. I tried different stuff, flipped some and pitched that darn senko thing around some for no bites. Around noon, I was throwing a frog on the mats and I see a fin sticking out of the weeds. I figured it was a carp or a catfish or something but I threw over there and when my frog got by the fin it disappeared and pow, frog fish. That culled my other small fish leaving me with a bunch of 2 to 2 and half pound fish.
Weigh in was a mix, there were three 5+ fish weighed in, but 8 guys blanked. Darce Caldwell won it with 4 fish for 15-6 which he caught mostly on senkos. All of his fish were chunks. He also reported losing a monster he figures was around 13 to 15lbs. Hard to doubt him when he was still practically shaking at weigh in! I took second with 11-5 for my limit. Joey Castro had third with 9-4. Joe caught his fish on delta money reapers and senkos. Jeff Andress of SCBBC had big fish with a 5.85 on a jig.
Mental note, I need to learn how to fish senkos! I got killed in the afternoon which was when Darce bagged all of his fish. I've read enough about it on ncbf, guess I just need to tie it on and fish till I catch something...
