#361, "August 12-13, 2000 Huntington Lake"

This weekend Summer and I went up to Huntington Lake to get in a mini-vacation with my parents and some of our other relatives. My family and some friends had fished Portal Forebay earlier in the week and said that the fishing was stupid wide open on planter rainbows. They were just using powerbait from shore and caught as many as they could want.
On Saturday morning my uncle John and I went down to where the water comes into Huntington around 8am. We fished pretty far up the river and the fishing was great. John caught 8 or 9 rainbows drifting eggs and worms, and I caught somewhere around 20 with half coming on the 2n 3/4 inch pins minnow and the rest drifting eggs on 4lb. I only caught one brown, a very skinny 12 incher on the pins minnow. All of the rainbows were stocker size but I did hook and lose one fish on the Pins that was 3 or 4 pounds. It came up and ate it, I set the hook and it just shook off. After breaking for lunch Summer came back down with me to "the point" our old favorite area down there. Fishing was great again, Summer caught 6 or 7 drifting eggs and had tons of bites, and unfortunately for the trout I cleaned up and caught 15 or 20 more drifting eggs. We released everything we caught.
On Sunday we took a leisurely morning and didn't go fishing until 11 or so. We went for a hike first at Sierra Summit and then came back down to the lot where they stock. The main pool there was loaded with planters, at least 50 and although they were really finicky at first the started biting after a while and we caught 10 or so in a short period of time on panter martens and eggs. Summer and I were having a blast watching them steal the eggs off the hooks. All in all a great weekend and some fun trout fishin.
