#1742, "August 19-25 - Lake Powell UT"

Summer and I went to Lake Powell this past week for vacation. We houseboated with some friends from Colorado for the week and of course the rods came along. Fishing overall was pretty good although the striper fishing was not quite what it was a few years ago.
The first four days we spent in llewellen (sp?). In three days of fishing from the houseboat and from the shore we caught about a half dozen small channel cats, ten carp, a whole bunch of bluegill from 3 to 6 inches, and I managed to pick up two keeper sized largemouth, one dink largemouth and about 7 or 8 little smallmouth. We caught the catfish on anchovies and the carp and bluegill on table scraps. The bass came mostly on a sammy and a couple on a skitter pop. The best bass I caught (only about 14 inches) I caught on a 1 inch long crappie jig while sight fishing for the fish. It was a cool spot where we were staying because there were two bass that lived in the back of this cove behind the houseboat. I watched them every day cruising the shallows and actually saw them eat several dragon flies off the stickups by jumping out of the water and grabbing them! That was pretty cool.
We went striper fishing two nights on a ski boat and despite lots of chumming and a good number of shad that came up under the lights of the boat, we only caught 4 or 5 stripers each night the biggest of which were about 15". I think that this particular cove just didn't have very many stripers in it.
The last night we moved up the lake to around slick rock and I did a little fishing off the house boat. Caught some bigger channel cats to around 3lbs and a bunch of 5lb carp. Little green ear sunfish were all around the boat and we caught some of those too.
All in all a fun trip. Lake Powell is an awesome lake for houseboating, hanging out, and fishin. The bass fishing I would rate as tough, but everything else is pretty decent. Despite slow striper fishing for us, there were tons of stripers in the marina at Dangling Rope and Rainbow Bridge so I'm sure if you hit the right spots you could catch tons of them.
