#13112, "One hatchery closed and three more to go..."
I met with Assembly Member Dave Cogdill last week to discuss strategy of getting AB 2280 through the legislature. He is asking all anglers who support the state hatchery system to send in letters of support.
Mad River State Hatchery closed last week and the next hatchery to be on the chopping block is Hot Creek Hatchery in Mammoth Lakes. Without passage of this important bill, it could close by summer. As of July 1st 2004, Hot Creek is without a budget. Originally, it was thought that the Hot Creek Foundation could save the hatchery but it seems that the foundation will not be able to come up with the funds needed to keep the hatchery operating.
The next closures will be Mojave River and Merced River Hatcheries.
If you need a copy of the support letters, I can furnish them by email or you can go to Assembly Member Cogdill's website at
