#1272, "Delta WON Bass - April 28, 2001"

LAST EDITED ON Apr-28-01 AT 06:55 PM (PST)

John and I fished the WON Bass team tournament today at the Delta. Weather was breezy all day with high clouds and at times stiff wind. Our game plan was to go fish, figure out what they wanted, and do that. Basically we planned on keeping things mellow and going witht the conditions. Oh wait, that's always our game plan!

We ran to Sherman first thing. I missed two small fish on the senko, then John whacks one and it's a good one. In the net goes a 6.54 pounder. Nice way to start the morning! We didn't spent much time in Sherman though because the tide was going out and we wanted to spend time in the break. Back to the break around 8:30 and we stayed there all day. We flipped and pitched for the morning. John had one small keeper on the senko and I had one about 2lbs on a jig. John's senko fish comes on this total backlash cast that wound up going into open water. Sure enough he picks it out and hooks up. We were like ... is this Clear Lake all over again??? I think we have too much fun out there fishing... Anyway, I missed several fish flipping including two on a 6" drop shot worm of all things. We were getting bit here and there but nothing major. Around 11 or so we started working some different areas and John got another keeper on a spinnerbait. Then, just when it's seeming to not pan out, and the water is getting too low, I stick 6 fish in about 45 minutes on a Manns 1- crankbait. One 5 and and three 3.5 to 4 pound fish fill up the rest of our limit nicely, culling out the little guys =) They just really got active and were bashing it pretty good. John got one on a rattle trap that didn't cull and that was kind of the end of the crank bite. Our trolling motor batteries by this time were pretty hurtin' from all the crank fishing so we went to some more protected areas and pitched senkos. At one point, John was casting his senko over this boat and over a cable on the boat. It was waaaay the heck back there and the cable was about 10 feet out of the water. Sure enough he hooks one up back there! He almost had it a couple times trying to swing it up over the cable, but it got off the hook and fell in the derelict boat. Then it went through a hole in the floor of the boat and we could hear it splashing around in the water filled inner hull. Don't know if it was able to escape through a hole but we felt bad for the little guy... It was funny watching John trying to swing that fish out though! The rest of the afternoon was just a pick. I picked up two more small keepers, one on senko and one on drop shot, nothing to cull. We weighed in 21.78lbs and took 3rd place. We were stoked for just going out and having a fun, relaxed day of fishing. 25lbs something had first and second place. Second place got their fish cranking speed traps and flippin S20 worms and first got theirs on some senko knock-off made by ufo. Big fish and second big fish were 8 something. Most bags were 12 to 17 pounds. Most guys had limits. Team B-n-T rides again! Next stop will be back at the Delta for our last tourney of the year on May 12.

We would also like to thank our sponsors: Castaway Rods, Okuma Reels, flippinlures.com, and MS Slammer.
