#530, "San Antonio-Santa Margarita Update"

I arrived at San Antonio Lake on last Sunday,April 1.Launching my kayak I went around the corner from my Harris Creek camp.Casting a shad rap I picked up a small bass, released it and paddled on up the Harris Creek arm.I found the water clear along west wall across from the small cartop launch ramp.Looking down into the fairly clear water, you good see some awesome bass.A few were better then 18",and almost took my breath away as I could glide right next to them. Two days of using everything in the tackle box would not move them to strike however.A pro bass fisherman had picked up several nice bass on Tuesday morning when I talked to him,but none of the monsters. He said forget it until they are guarding the nest.Surface water temps were 62% at the shore across from the cartop ramp, and seemingly(finger test)warmer further back in the cove. One thing I noticed, was that San Antonio has a big problem with carp and goldfish. Some of those carp were larger then 30" as they cruised just under my kayak.Clouds of the big (12" or larger)goldfish, some groups in the hundreds were all over back in the shallow weedbeds in the back of Harris Creek arm.I am no expert on bass behavior, but give that lake a little time, and better fishing is set to happen. After three days of camping and paddling in the wind,I moved down to Santa Margarita on Wednesday.Although the water is still stained,it is much clearer then it had been. The pictures of the lake on the board at the gate show it as muddy as the Red river just after the storm around April 7.You can now see down several feet in some areas.I picked up a 18 " largemouth the first evening off the point west of the marina.I was trolling a blue broken-back rebel.I often troll from my kayak to explore a new lake to find pockets of activity, then go to casting on result.I picked up a hard fighting 19 to 20" trout at the same point on Thursday. The water was cooler then it was at Harris Creek. The fish report board at front gate said 58%,I guess that seems close, but I didn't have a thermometer.Again, give that lake a bit of time and things could get interesting.Had it not got cold and windy starting last weekend it could have been better fishing, but I guess thats why they call it fishing, not catching. One question, does the weedy flat called Picnic Bay near the swimming pool get used very much as a spawning bed when it warms up? It look promising.I want to come back around the fullmoon in May and give Santa Margarita another try. While San Antonio looks good,Santa Margarita is more conducive to fishing from a kayak.Scott Shaw
