Hi Dave. I lived in Humboldt county for four years and I honestly believe that Humboldt county has more year-round hunting/fishing opportunities than anywhere else in California. Your kayak should come in handy. Saltwater fishing includes lingcod/rock cod fishing from mid spring to late fall and summer halibut in the bay. Both are easily accessible by your kayak. If you are into fly fishing, some of the most amazing fly fishing for adult steelhead and half-pounders takes place on all of the local rivers from late summer through fall. Once the rain starts, all of the local rivers receive major runs of salmon and steelhead. If you are into bass fishing, freshwater lagoon has a decent population of largemouth. It’s kind of a strange fishery but I’ve had some very good days on surprisingly large bass. Ruth and trinity lakes can also be good for bass throughout the year. I hope this helps you out a little bit. If you have any questions I can certainly try to answer them. You can E-mail me at Leedom@hawaii.edu.
