#14608, "Spinning rod recommendation for surf fishing"
I was looking for a decent spinning rod for surf fishing - primarily 4-6 lb. test. Was curious what others were using. Length, 1 or 2 piece, and action recommendations appreciated as well.

I am far from the most knowledgeable person on this board but I use a 7' medium action one piece rod and 8 lb test when i am targeting halibut from the shore.
One piece rods are not as convenient but it's worth it for the action and feel.
I usually use a 7' ultra light action two piece for perch (though i wish it was a one piece) I use the same reel with the 8 lb test but with a 4lb leader.
I hope that helps. Maybe some of the other folks will speak up and give you better info. This board has really slowed down recently.

Thanks Rob - I was aiming at the 7 foot one piece graphite... but was glad to get your advice. I want an ultralight setup too.
Mr Tree has a baby on the way and there will be a Mini Tree soon. I'm cutting my costs for awhile on the big fishing trips and going local. Mrs. Tree and I are very happy. We found it it is going to be a boy - so I can't wait to have a new fishing buddy to take out on the Stardust for a 1/2 day of fishing with excellent breakfast burritos!

I know its abit late but.... I use a Berkley Air IM7 rod for my surf fishing when going for perch. 8 1/2 ft, 8-12lb rated for steelheading. Not quite an ul but it handles fine with 6lb. I love it, but i don't use it for larger baits or fish beyond perch really. I prefer a baitbaster, but I use an 6'6" medium Shimano cheapie setup for my 8lb setup on smaller swimbaits and jerkbaits. Works fine I actually like 2 pieces bcz I can get them in a smaller car for traveling to the beach :-) Good luck!

Thanks for your recommendations.
I ended up getting a St. Croix tidemaster one piece, 7 foot, light power/moderate action for 6-12lb. test and a Daiwa SS Tournament reel for 6lb. test.
