#2184, "Question on Life Expectancy of Spectra-Braid Lines"
Hi All,
I have several reels that have Spectra (ranging from 50# to 80# that have gone through a San Diego Tuna Season back in 2002 and has been sitting idle for the past two years. It seems to be in good condition however I would like to know if there is a general rule of thumb on changing spectra (unlike regular mono).

I don't know how long it lasts from personal expierence but I have heard that it lasts 10 years or more. What I do do is wash my spectra once a year. It keeps the spool free from salt water adn will hopefuly make my spectra last longer. Batman

I'll let you in on my secret. I get all motivated to try braided line. Then I spool some up and take it out fishing. Then it breaks for no reason and digs into itself when I get snagged and cuts my fingers when I forget not to pull on it when tying knots. Then I get home and change it out for some nice mono or florocarbon.
Sorry, I couldn't resist :) I really have no clue how long braid lasts.

To my knowledge nobody knows for sure how long it lasts. I would keep it away from sunlight & ozone, tho.
Swimbait, Spectra is notorious for all the features you mention, particularly the poor knot strength. Spectra usually tests closer to it's label rating than monos. If you're used to 15# P-line or Izor then the 15# Spectra will break at significantly less pressure.
Personally, the only use I have for Spectra as a main line is rockfishing. For everything else it is there as backing.
I saw a Spectra backlash on a baitcaster once. It was ugly...

I am pretty sure it has to do with how much light it is exposed to I usally replace mine once the color really washes all the way out and it starts to look haggard :+
