I picked up a calcutta 401 used months back and would love another but its just to much $. I like the 401 size but the 301 might be a little lighter. THe cardiff seems to be a good value. Looking for people with experience to jump in.

thanks

Steve

I think they're both great Reels for the money!! I'd say if your planning on using 25lb. mono or higher, go with the 401..20lb. mono or lower, go with the 301.

Good Luck, Bill Q.

I agree with Billy.Q, I have the 300a size and it's perfect for the smaller or lighter big baits on 20lb or 15lb. They have the recessed reel foot and that makes them nice and comfortable to palm/handle.

I couldn't be happier with mine so far, my 400 should be in the mail right now :D

I use a Cardiff 301 to throw baits as heavy as Hud's and I'm very happy with it. I have not fought a double-digit fish with it yet, so I really can't tell you about it's effectiveness of the drag, but I have confidence it will get the job done.

I also have a Calcutta 401 TE...I love it, but I bought the Cardiff as my second reel because of the price.

Do you use 20lb test when throwing your huds on the 300A?

Yes, 20 lb FC on the 301 and 25 lb FC on the 401.

Cool thanks. I wasn't sure if 20lb test was strong enough for the huds...
