I REALLY NEED SOME ADVICE,I'VE ALWAYS USED LIVE BAIT(SANDCRABS,BLOODWORMS,)I JUST RECENTILY PURCHASED BIG HAMMER 1 1/2" MOTOR OIL GRUBS, I TRIED USING THEM ON A CAROLINA RIG (WITH A 1 OZ. SLIDING SINKER 2 1/2 FEET OF LEADER LINE BETWEEN THE SWIVEL AND THE JIG HEAD.)THE ONLY THING IS THAT THE JIG HEAD SEEMS TO HEAVY FOR THE GRUB.IS IT BETTER TO JUST USE A SIZE 6 OR 4 BAIT HOOK INSTEAD OF THE JIG HEAD? CAN ANY ONE PLEASE GIVE ME A DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF WHAT KIND OF HOOK TO USE ON THE GRUB AS WELL AS A BETTER RIG.

Hey there,

I'd use a spinning outfit and Carolina rig with a 1/4oz sliding egg sinker, 8lb test main line, small bead and swivel and a 4lb test, 4 to 5ft fluorocarbon leader with a #6 to #10 octopus hook for your 1 1/2" grubs. Some might say that's a little light but better that than ziltch. You might want to put some calico cocktail or smelly jelly on your offering.

Works for me, good luck!

I use the following rig for my grub fishing. 6lbs P-Line CXX mainline ->1/2oz sliding egg sinker->small bead->small ball bearing swivel->about 20" of 6lbs flourocarbon leader->size 8 Owner mosquito hook.

I like the 1/2 oz for the extra distance (if needed) and to keep the rig on the bottom when there is surf. A quality swivel is important to keep the leader from tangling up on your swivel. Some people like to use long leaders in the surf but I find it difficult to manage. I get too many knots and twists all over the place. Around 20" seems to work the best for me. I've caught fish on leaders that are 7" long. Good luck!

Tom

I had problems with the longer leader too, so I now use a 18-20" 4-6lb test leader. I use size 6 or size 8 Gamakatsu baitholder hooks instead of the octopus hooks. When rigging the grub on the hook, I have experimented and had success by not threading it all the way onto the hook, but rather thread it on only halfway, so that there is some of the hook shaft portruding from the tip of the grub. I dunno, just seems to work better getting fish to hold on.

** tight lines make all my troubles go away **

dont use a jighead after the egg sinker. your carolina rig should go like this:

main line (6-10lb test) with 1/2 oz MAXIMUM or lighter egg sinker on it. then slip on a bead of some sort. tie on the swivel and attach your leader (4-6lb test). tie on a hook. match the size of the hook to the size of your lure. if youre using the 1.5" grubs then id suggest you use a #6-4 hook. you can either rig it weedless (texas style), thread the hook through like you would with a jighead, or hook it on like you would a live baitfish.

Hi, I just finished an article on fishing the grubs. It has sections on traditional vs. nose-hooking the grubs (pictures too), leaders, gear, location/conditions, etc. It should be up on the Hammer site shortly.

I don't think anyone mentioned it so I will; MOTOR OIL & ROOTBEER colored grubs are solid colors to start with.

tight lines!

All of the info from the guys is good. The tide is as important as anything. The motor oil gold and red flake are always a good bet. I fished Zuma and Pt Magu this morning for excellent results on the grub. 3/4 oz slider, 6lb and 8LB mono, with about a 18" leader. I agree that a long leader is trouble. The fish in the surf do not have a lot of time to eat the bait, so when they are on the grub they usually eat it good. I caught 4 decent sized halibut on the 3,4 oz mega bait by hopping it off the botom at slack tide. No keepers but a lot of fun. I saw a lot of guys out on the yacks. Nice day to be out. Good luck.

Here it is. Pretty much everything you need to know to get started.

And if you want to add some halibut, white seabass, and even more perch to your trips you might want to check out these articles also. You can use the same equipment (rod, reel, line).

I fish the same rig as most 4lb Maxima or CXX Pline main-slider-bead-swivel- 4lb leader cut from main line or Flouro in clear conditions 18"-36" depending on condtitions. I started using Fongsters Method of nose hooking the grub last season. There's no going back to the traditional method as far as I'm concerned. The nose hook has allows the plastic to swim more freely producing more strikes. Motor Oil/ red flake, clear/red flake, Motor oil/ gold flack all work great but my favorite color which is rare mentioned is orange. Orange or Oxblood with red patterns produce the best results for me. Not too many guys throw those patterns and they are hard to find. I order mine through a tackle catalog. Good luck and I'll see you on the water.
