#1967, "October 20, Cachuma Lake"

Brian and Zack and I launched the boat at 6:30 this morning. I started out throwing an Osprey while Zack and Brian threw buzzbaits and ripbaits. Brian got one fish on the buzzbait. As the fog cleared Brian switched to pitching, and caught two more fish. I decided to throw surface iron just for the hell of it, and although I didn't get touched, I threw it for a good 6.5 hours. The remaining half hour was the MS Slammer, speedtrap and reeper that I would randomly decide to use now and then. I think the surface iron could catch fish, but the wood bite didn't seem to be on today. No interest in any of the plugs or swimbaits. If nothing else, it's pretty funny to see the expressions on people's faces when you bomb an iron twice as far as a trout plug and it results in a huge eruption, normally considered out of casting distance... I'll probably throw the iron some more, just cause it looked so good. I was running it right on the surface so it kicked like a slammer. I think a rainbow trout colored one with a bucktail might catch. We'll see. It would definitely be satisfying to catch a bass on iron. But, anyway, Brian ended up with 3 fish for about 7.5#, Zack missed about 34 bites and broke off a nice fish, I didn't even get bit, and we saw a 10 pounder in the marina. Lots and lots of little tiny shad in the lake. Kind of weird, I've never seen this many shad.

Nice report, keep throwing the iron! If a calico whacks a spinnerbait, I'm sure a largemouth would gulp an iron jig, it looks as much like a baitfish as anything else. Predators eat fish, yeah? Glad you guys got a few up there.

Hi brian,

I am going up to Cachuma this Saturday can you give me some info on what to take and areas to try? What color buzzbait did you guys use? What were you guys pitching to catch your fish? Thanks, any info would be greatly appreciated.

Normally you throw white or chartreuse buzzbaits. Brian was throwing a white one. Pitch fish came on brush hogs, or as Zack calls them, hog brushes. Zack got many many bite on senko but catch not so many. As for areas to try, we weren't on a pattern, so most of our fish were just random. Try Santa Cruz, Cachuma, Jack Rabbit and Storke. We got one or two in the Mianus region as well (just outside the narrows).

Thanks Brain,

Where is this Mianus region I have never heard of it? What color brush hogs were they using? Is there that much brush to still flip in? When is the tourney you guys are fishing that way I can avoid the crowds? 4 wood fish were caught? What size wood baits or swim baits would you guys recommend for this lake? Any ares to try with them?

Mianus is just a name we gave to the coves right outside of the narrows. We didn't catch any wood fish, and the tournament was yesterday, but it was just a small club tournament. 7 and 9 inch plugs are pretty standard.

Yeah, Brian kept making me pitch the iron to all the bushes. I told him it would spook all the fish, but he wouldn't listen. LMAO.

I tried the iron a few years ago at Margarita and thought that it looked pretty good. It was just a little too much though for the freshwater bass I think. I have heard of a few fish being caught at Casitas on it though. If they were in a stupid trout eating mood you could probably get them to go on it every now and then.
