#3055, "February 26, 2002 - Quarry Ponds"

Today was a double run :-) I was on my way to lunch but I looked up and took a deep breath and said, hookup!!! I had my stuff in the back of the truck for after work but I jammed over there to the ponds at around 11:30 and fished until 1. I started out with a brush hog for about 10 minutes and was trying to look for sight fish. Didn't see much so I threw out my other rod with a blade. I I was fishing from shore btw ... anyway first cast this 3lb smallie comes up and just gives it a love tap and swims off. I was like heeeeeyyyy come back. Boy a couple casts later things started happening with that blade though and in the next 30 minutes I caught 5 and missed one other one ( which I am 90% sure I caught on the next cast anyway ). They were all largemouth. The smallest was probably 2 and a half and the best two were 3-11 and 3-15. I had 16 or 17lbs for 5 on my lunch break, that was killer! I did see a fair amount of fish but couldn't catch any of the ones I saw.

After work I raced back over there and started throwing my blade like a mad man. I didn't get there until 5:15 though and it just didn't feel right with the blade after about 20 minutes. So I jumped out and went to the other pond and said hey to Dave who had been there for a bit with no lovin yet. My second cast with a watermelon brushog resulted in hookup. A nice fish, I didn't weigh it, it was probably 3 and 3/4 or so. It was getting late but we kept at it for another 20 minutes or so and I wound up getting one more 2 n 3/4 type fish on the b-hog and Dave pulled a nice one probably a little over 3 on a spider jig. HUGE full moon came up over the hill on the way home. It was pretty cool.

Here are some pics, I didn't get one of the 3-11. I just weighed the fish and though ok, that's good and let it go. As it was swimming away I'm like hey wait a minute ... doh, but that's ok. I didn't take any pics of the evening fish I caught either because it was late and I wanted to fish and not take pictures.

3-15 on the blade. I haven't caught spinner fish in a long time so this was pretty fun :o

Dave with a nice one - the flash makes it look a lot darker than it was.

I've been reading some of you Quarry lake posts...and they are great. I just found this board, and I must say, it's so much better than the trash talking on some of the other boards (ie fishsniffer)

Anyway, I've been exclusively trout fishing at Quarry...however, with the spring coming on, I would like to try my hand at Bass fishing.

A fcouple of questions.
1) Do you fish Horseshoe lake or Rainbow lake (I can't tell from the pictures)?
2) I don't own a float tube, do you think that fishing off of the bank for bass will be at least semi-effective?

I plan on using LIGHT gear (4-6 lb test) with small crankbaits....

I hope I can pick up a few of the beautiful bass you've been posting.

Thanks

I've been fishing both ponds. Cranks should work fine although I haven't caught any on cranks yet. As you saw, I caught a bunch from shore yesterday but usually I tube. Both ponds have largemouth and smallmouth. Just please catch and release the bass. Too many people are killing them and taking them home. They are not stocked and they will not come back if too many people put them on stringers and take them away. These little ponds are getting hit hard and it won't last forever.

I really like that rod holder on the float tube... anyone know how to make one of those?

I've got one similar made out of aluminum and pvc, but it's really heavy. Post on the bass n tubes board, you'll get a million ideas.
