I've got a hankerin' for some smallmouth, but I'm in L.A. Anybody know where I can find some? I'm strictly shore-'n-wade. Smallmouth in rivers would be especially nice, but I'll fish anywhere.

There are only two lakes that I know of that have smallmouth fisheries. Pyramid and Cachuma. Pyramid I think is closed because of the fire threats but should open when it cools down a little. For Pyramid I would suggest dragging dropshots over points, t-rigged
single tails in smoke or something natural, or small brown and orange
jigs. the smallies aren't that big for the most part but they aren't shy and they know how to scrap. If you can't get em to go on the points try the walls drop shotting. If you find em 10 fish is a bad day. You need to rent a boat at both these places. Cachuma I have never fished but I know there are bigger smallies in there as well as
a good LMB fishery.

The upper reservor in in the Azusa Canyone was drained about 4 or 5 years back to do some work on the dam. At the time it was rumored that they dumped some of the fish in Santa Fe Dam and some in Puddingstone. The rest were supose to back to the lower lake. Both the lakes in The Canyon have smallmouth. I thought it was a rumor but sure enough that season we did catch some smallies in puddingstone. Didn't fish Santa Fe so I can't confirm that one. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like they made it in puddingstone because I havn't seen any since then.

Excellent - thanks.

Do you know when the best time is for them, especially in the shallows?

75 smallies per person per day - easy. All you want. 2-4 lbers on everything wal-mart sells, no brainers and best of all - no people. Make the investment and go, it won't last forever and it's alot cheaper than you think.

There are smallmouth in the Lower Kern mixed with rainbows, squaws, largemouth and bluegill. Very scrappy fighters on ultralight gear - great fun fishing the bank here.
