#3110, "fishing in the sierras...when?"

Hi Everyone,
I'm planning on going up to the Yosemite/eastern sierras during spring break (March 9-18) and was wondering if I can fish those areas any time of year or if I have to wait for an opening date. Thanks!

Joe

I dont fish up there much, but I do know that certain creeks and river sections are closed from time to time. Your best bet will be to find a tackle shop in the area. They will be able to point you in the right direction.

Here fishy, fishy, fishy......

Well it depends which part of the Sierra yer going to. Bishop has year round fishing at their lakes and streams. However the rest of the way up the 395 is all closed off. A lot of the lakes will prolly still be frozen over. The East Walker river is also open year round, but I believe its all flies only, C&R.

Maybe to brighten your day, the snow conditions at Mammoth were incredible the beginning of Feb. The best in a couple of years.

I don't know what day the main Eastern Sierra opener is, but before the opener your options are somewhat limited. Tomorrow ( March 2nd) they will open Pleasant Valley, the Lower Owens, Diaz Lake and the various creeks around Bishop. Every year WON hypes up this Diaz Lake for the southern opener but don't fall for it. I fished it once with Jamon and it is a shallow mud hole way down the valley from Bishop. They load it up with planters for the southern opener but when we went the fishing was just plain bad because the water visibility was about 6 inches. I'd go up to Pleasant Valley and throw Kastmasters or Thomas Bouyants. Mix in the Pins Minnow for the browns and then when you get bored of that, hit the various roadside access spots on the lower owens for a shot at some scrappy browns and the occasional alpers.

I forgot to add it in my previous post, but the opener is April 28. There are always some lunkers caught the first weekend. Last year was a 15 something brownie caught at June. I personally like fishing in mid-May and early October. October seems to have a larger quantity of bigger fish come up before the winter freeze.
