#10123, "Cachuma for something other then trout"

Hey guys,
I am going to Cachuma Saturday the 21st in a friends boat to probably try for some trout. I imagine we're gonna troll / drift for them which is fine, but it isn't my favorite type of fishing in the world, it can get pretty boring if the action is slow... My question is this, what else is going on up there right now? Any Largemouth or Smallmouth Bass action? Redear? Crappie? If anyone has any info I would greatly appreciate. I am hoping I can convince this guy to try casting for something other then trout for a while...

;)

Thanks!

While drifting for trout (not trolling) you can also cast lures for the trout down current (opposite side of the boat from your drifting rods). The fight can be better when drifting than when trolling. Adjust the weight and your countdown for the cast lures to the depth of the fish (maybe surface to 10 to 15' deep in the AM before the fog burns off, and 20 to 30' deep thereafter; check with the guys at the marina shop and check your meter).

I believe that bass and redear have been on and off. Check with the shop guys and dock guy.
Bob

I just spent three days fishing Cachuma. The bass fishing is pretty slow and you really have to work for them. I spent most of the time casting (drifting/trolling isn't my game either) for trout and did well. Quite a few surface fish in the early morning. Superdupers/castmasters working the best. I did manage to pick up one big redear with a serious anger management problem. He destroyed a plastic worm while I was bass fishing, but it was more of an accidental catch than anything. Tight lines.

Great info guys... I'll let you know how I do up there.
Mark, where did you get your redear at? If you don't mind sharing... what area of the lake and what depth etc... I love catching those guys, like you said, the have serious anger management issues.
Also, for the trout, what size kastmasters were you using and what colors worked the best?

Thanks again!
