The best advice I could give would be, choose the location wisely. Maybe try fishing a beach protected by a breakwall first. Then graduate to south or north facing beaches where the waves aren't that big. When there are waves, observed the surf and learn to time the sets. Launch your tube exactly when the set ends and kick like hell to get beyone the break before the next set. Do the same when getting out... Sit just beyone the wave breaks util the set has passed. Then kick like hell to reach shore before you get pounded. It takes patience and good timing.

Good luck,
Terry G.

From a guy who has been flipped...As mentioned, try to pick small days and places that aren't exposed. Pack anything that shouldn't get wet inside plastic zip bags (cell phone, car security clicker). Remember, you are super slow moving in a tube and most likely won't be able to outrun a wave. If you are going to be hit going into the surf, kick super hard and lean into the wave with your back to it. Try not to get into that situation, however. :o

Three things you want to watch out for as mentioned heavy surf which is most obvious. Also heavy current, whatch the water for a while before you get in try to avoid areas that flow like river and will take you straight out in to open water. Check the weather before you go. Heavy winds especially santa ana's which come up quick and will blow you off shore can be very dangerous. Go with other people and always let someone know where your going and when you plan on coming back. Use good judgement and you'll be fine.
