2111, Trancas Beach Report

Skipped school today and headed out to Trancas. Launched before it got light, that was sorta scary. I casted the Rat-L-Trap in shallow for a little while, than moved out deep. Out in about 40 feet of water I caught a sandy and two calicos with numerous farmed bites(even with the trebles!) so at least I know the Rat-L-Trap works. I was surprised how loud the rattleing is. You could hear it before you could see it on the retrieve. I also had two halibut and a johnny bass examine the lure and then dart away when it got close to the kayak. Headed back in after an hour or so and caught 3 more calicos, a cabezon and two short flatties on sardine FTs. The water was pretty murky with a lot of sand crab shells and there were a bunch of dolphins out too. An OK day but my first legal halibut of this year remains elusive.
Tight Lines,
Tommy

cool outing. if you see followers, stop reeling so your lure stalls and sinks, this should trigger a strike.

Thanks for the tip Mr. Fong, the problem today was I just wasnt paying attention I guess. One of the halibut followed the Rat-L-Trap to the surface and I left it it the water for a couple of seconds and then I heard this big splash and I managed to see his little tail before he took off. The other one was about 10 feet down and was already going back down before I noticed him. Pretty cool stuff, we never used to see free swimming halibut from our old boat. Thanks also for that other tip you gave me a while back about putting another lure in the water when calicos start to follow eachother to the surface. I had a double hook up today and it was pretty fun.
Good Luck,
Tommy
