I went down to the harbor after work. Brian #2 was waiting for other Brian to get there with the dingy. I launched my float tube and paddled around for about 30 minutes. The water was very clear, like 8 foot vis in places. The tide was up pretty good. Something felt wrong though, I dunno, it seemed sterile or something. The water wasn't right.

So I left right away and went to Goleta Beach. I saw Brian and Brian launching but didn't hear much of a report other than that they had one calico bass bite about an hour later.

I didn't get out to Goleta until late. The waves weren't big, but they were big enough to make you sit and watch for a few minutes before paddling out. I decided to be gung ho and head out to some of the kelp beds a ways off shore.

This produced one 2 and a half pound type calico bass and a short seabass that railed me with about 10 feet of line out :) That was pretty entertaining. I had another seabass follow my bait up and missed one more bite all in the same spot. There were fish there but they didn't seem aggressive after I caught the first one. After that I tried for halibut again and only had one small strike. Everything caught on 5" #13 Baitfish color Big Hammers as per normal.

short white sea biscuit, about 25"

Hey dude. This is "the other Brian", the one who went dinghy fishing with Brian 2 today. For the sake of everyone's sanity, Brian 2 gave me the official title of "Brian 7", so that's what I'll go by from now on.

We hit the water just past 5:30 and went straight to the kelp beds off leadbetter beach. We drifted through various beds and fished slow crank and off the bottom. After several hours we had each caught one calico (mine first, but smaller). Both were caught near the surface.

On our way back to the cars we stopped at the bait barge to try for seabass. No bites, no hits, nothing. I think we're going to try goleta beach tomorrow.

I couldn't tell you what # it was, but we both used 5" big hammers.

hey Brian #7 - nice name :)

It seems like fishing inshore is just kind of picky pick pick still. Fish here, fish there. It should only get better though.

Brian #2 isn't going by that name anymore. Now you can call him deuce deuce. Not sure why. He thinks it's more gangster.

Bryan

cool man. I checked the conditions about an hour ago here on the Mesa. There's still some swell out there but nothing too big. At Goleta it will probably be like 1.5 to 2 feet. There was a lot of water movement down the beach, probably because the tides are getting stronger as we get closer to the full moon. I may try to make it out there, it all depends :) My tube is blue/black with the usual blaze orange patch on the back.
