Ive got the All-star Western Inshore 8'6 15-40lb extra heavy too. It came in handy for landing 20lb yellowtail off san clemente.
I prefer the lighter 8' 12-30lb heavy rod for going after the bass.

That rod is the best one out of their series--heavy, fast action. Shuts off quick. The others are a tad too slow for me (parabolic). I personally fish Loomis but am replacing my 12 pound L904 with a GUSA B70H which we are extending the butt to make it a 7-6 from 7-0 (a much faster blank than the L904, which I'll keep for mooching salmon, it's that soft/slow). The Calcutta series CL812XF, 15XF and 20XF are the best 'stock' calico graphites out there right now--pricey though--$200-225. Reelwise, I like the calcuttas and Catalas.

My all time favorite calico combo is a calstar 800xl with a calcutta 400 w/ 15#. However I am in the process of building a light action shikari blank that is 9ft 4in. I havn't fished it yet but it looks and feels sweet, with 10# on the newell 229 (or a calcutta 400) it's going to be bitchin'.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-09-01 AT 11:18 AM (PST)

Yeah right!!!!! Not until I see one in person. Shimano really needs to make a calcutta 300.

Well I don't know what I'd choose if I had to pick one. My current swimbait setup, SL20 on an 8' Black Steel 15-40lbs. is awesome. But, it won't throw the small stuff that well. So, probably my Allstar Inshore 8' 12-30lb. w/ an Abu 6500 C3. Then I could throw the small and bigger stuff.

hey Ed,
Did you ever make it to San Clemente? I saw you had to do some boat jugglin at the last minute there, did you make it out?

We ended up on the 3/4 day out of Dana. I guess the Voyager skipper thought it was going to be a cruddy day on the water. It was cold and there was a south wind, but it wasn't horrible. I finshed off he day w/ 3 legal calicos. One was on a live squid and 2 were on a 4" Hammer dark brown backed w/ a rootbeer & gold flake belly. These last two were on the last stop, plus three shorts. After 7 hrs of fishing for a couple shorts and one legal, I pull 5 total in 30 min. I guess I should've tried that color sooner.

Over all, it was very slow. 9 bass for 10 people, 1 halibut, a couple mackerel, and a couple johny bass. I was fun though. A friend of mine who I've hung out w/ for 20yrs is moving out of state, so it was good just hanging w/ him.

Tournament at Shelter Island tomorrow. Hopefully I can place again, I'd like to solidify my lead a bit more. Alright, a lot more. You guys have fun at the bbq. Maybe I'll make the next one.

I almost exclusivly fish plastics for calicos, that said my #1 favorite stick is my shimano calcutta 815xfa with my shimano catala, with 15lb p-line, second favorite would be my calcutta 812xfa with a curado and 12lb p-line for 4in swimbaits,my calcutta 820xfa rod with a calcutta 400 and 20-25lb p-line for 6-7 in swim baits would be my third choice, although all three rods go with me almost every trip...Larry
