Here is my son's report for Cabo San Lucas for last week.

1. Surf fished at sunrise and sunset daily for about 2 hours each time. Three oz. chrome Ranger lure produced 3 sierra at about 8 lbs, 1 roosterfish at about 8 lbs, and 10 jack crevalle from 5 to 20 lbs. Jack crevalle is not a prestige fish, but they fight very hard. The 20 lber took about 45 minutes to land. Inexperienced surfcasters were not doing well. Fish were mostly about 60 yards and beyond from shore.

2. One day shared a cruiser with one other angler. Started inshore for meat for the cooler fishing using live sardines for sierra. Many sierra unbuttoned until deck hand started attaching a second hook. Later moved offshore for striped marlin. One striped marlin caught and released for the two anglers. Many striped marlin were caught by the rest of the fleet.

3. Took a chance on a panga on one windy/rough day. Skunk resulted.

Hey Bob thanks for the report. Can your son give any suggestions for rigging? Also baits I can use from the surf. I am going to be there July 1 and plan on doing some serious Surf fishing. I am staying at the Melia.

I will reply with specific details in a few days when I next see or talk to my son. Roughly, from memory, here are some tentative answers.

1. Rig must get a 3 oz. lure at least 60 yards, preferably much farther when the fish are farther out. My son uses a 9' spinning rod rated for 30 lb. Minimum reel capacity appropriate for that beach might be about 300 yards at 20 lb. I think my son's reel has 500 yards of 20 lb.

2. I do not think that bait is appropriate for such vigorous long casts, but I will check with my son about success with bait at that beach. In recent trips he has switched exclusively to the 3 oz. chrome Ranger lure. This lure is available in the U.S., likely in socal, but also at Hi's Tackle in San Francisco (they have a web site). Minerva's shop in Cabo might sell the Ranger lure, but I would not go to Cabo without having all my gear in my luggage (not carry on for hooks and lures).

Bryan (Bassin), here is an update for surfcasting from the beach at Cabo.

1. Do not use a swivel between the line and leader because fish there might bite the swivel and damage the line. (My son uses a 40 lb 100% fluoro leader, but fluoro can be problematic in this situation for anglers who do not know how to tie mono to fluoro.) A good quality snap swivel can be used at the lure.

2. A Gamakatsu stinger hook at the connector eye of the lure will increase the hookups.

3. I was wrong about the line in my report. It was 15 lb, not 20 lb.

4. Apparently the Ranger lure is not available at Hi's Tackle in San Francisco. In norcal it is sold at the Outdoor Pro Shops (not affiliated with Bass Pro Shops) in Rohnert Park and Emeryville/Oakland. Check the web for Ranger lures.

5. Scent helps, but do not be sloppy by getting it beyond the lure and hooks.

I know this is kind of an old post, but I am going to Cabo on the 1st of July and am going to be doing a lot of surf fishing. Besides throwing Ranger lures (by the way, who makes these?), has anyone tried anything else? Metal? Kroc's? Bighammers? I am staying at the Melia. I have heard that surf fishing right out in front there is good early and late in the day. Also have heard good things about fishing down around the opening to the harbor/marina??

Ranger Lures are made by Roberts Lures..and can be purchased online at Norhouse.com for a good price. As far size/colors, I'd recommend 3oz. / 4oz. lures in chrome and chrome/blue. They also make a smaller verion lure called the "Whistler" which only weighs 2oz. but is very castable....hope this helps, and good luck!!...
