Took the kayak for its first voyage into open water. Launched early from the beach launch and paddled toward the rest of the kayakers. Started yo yoing a scrambled egg tady 4/0 and got short bit within 10 minutes. Birds started working right in front of me so I moved toward em and got a few bonito all in a row. It was every drop of the iron for about 5 casts, but I was lookin for yellow. Left that area after catching a few (my first one btw, I was quite impressed with their will power) and didn't get bit for the rest of the day. Current picked up around 11, didn't see anybody catch anything besides bonito. Launch and landing were smooth, but there were some rollers outside the cove. I bled and kept one bonito out of curiosity and it actually made some pretty tasty tacos.

Congrats on the new ride and first adventure . Ive heard bonito are good if you bleed them quickly. Now all you need to do is hang a big ol mossback.

Nice job on the bonies, at least. They are my saving grace while I pine for my first yellowtail.

Last week I had about 4 on the Salas 6x Jr so I switched to a lighter rod with 10# mono and threw a big krok at them. That was a blast. I kept my Salas deadsticked (deadstuck?) underneath me as it's not uncommon for the yellows to be mixed in with schooling bonita. But it was not to be. Maybe this weekend.

Hey drew, nice to see you post over here, I've read your posts on the kayak boards. You're partially responsible for this money swallowing hole, I hope you realize... :P we should get out there sometime.

No doubt!

I think I'm going to launch La Jolla on Sunday if the weather permits. If weather sucks I will probably hit Mission Bay in prep for tourney. Either way - I'll be attending the Church of Fishing on Sunday.

Just found this one Brian. Glad you made it out to the big pond.

I'll be hitting Mission Bay again this Sat. if you want to show up (you too Drew). Last week was a little too breezy for my liking, plus only 2 barely legal sandies. This Sat. should be about the same. Have I made it an attractive enough offer? Let's toss in another early launch, around 6:30, same launch (just south of Bahia Hotel).
