9540, Channel Islands Report For 4/19

Me my and my buddies Matt, John, and Miguel launched my boat out of Ventura harbor today, and after picking up premo sardies from the fuel dock we headed out to Capa for some croaker hunting. What a difference a day makes in weather! Very nice traveling to the Island! We get three miles off the Island and I can already see the lights of the fleet at the secret spot (arch) and as we pull up(6:00am), we find that everybody was bendo! So after watching everybody else pull in fish for an hour I finally hook up(7:00) and land a fat 25lb wsb! Next drift is Matts turn! Unfortunately the hook pulls just out of color (doh) and at about 7:30 that was it for the morning bite. If you go, GO EARLY! So we work our way up the back side of Capa for a few of those endangered lings (released of course) and 12lb flatty that fell for a 5in clear/red flake Big Hammer.
At about 9:00ish we decide to run over to Pedro point at Cruz to checkmit out and right as we get there, theres a frantic mayday call on channel 16, seems a 26ft sailboats had run aground in little scorpion harbor and is freeking out! Fortunately for him that was just around the corner from us and a 45ftish yacht, so we haul butt up there to find this guy and his wife kinda teetering on the reef about ten ft off shore, well there wasn’t enough water in there for the big boat to go get him so we went in for them, good thing it wasn’t yesterday with all that wind! Well after about 5-10 tense minutes we able to pull that sail boat out of there and into safe water while the big boat stood by just in case. Fortunately they didn’t sustain any real damage to the boat and limped it back in. Well enough on that! So we worked our way up to sandstone point on the backside of Cruz for 6 calicos to maybe 2lbs and a couple lings. At about 1:30 we decide to head back over to Capa for the afternoon tide change, and so did every body else! Our second drift its Johns turn! But I think that one was a yella cause it smoked him! And that was pretty much it! We stayed till 4:00pm and did not see anybody else hook up. Nice to be out on the ocean again with good friends! ….Larry
