Bryan and I fished Haskell's on Sunday to see if we could get on a good bite like we had last weekend, and much to our suprise it was a bit tougher. The water was a bit dirtier but other than that conditions felt close to the same. I started off like I normally do just fan casting towards the beach, hitting any boiler that I notice. I was right in the spot were I stuck a bunch of my fish last week and I wasn't getting bit. So I started to get more serious. There happened to be a bit more weeds in the water this week so I switched up from the Fast track to the 4 inch Wookie Wacker and I started activly seaching for any sign of boilers. Well in less than a minute I noticed a small group of boilers (probably about 7 rocks very close together. I set up so I had a good angle to fish them and I started to cast and cover each rock individually, putting one cast on the left side one on the right and one right over the top of each rock. Well after covering about half the rocks I brought my bait back right over the top of a rock and let it drop and I got hammered. Brought the fish to the boat and it was an 18 inch halibut. So from then on out I realized that today was not the day for random casting, it was a day to hunker down and do some "actual" fishing. I fished slow and methodlicly for the rest of the day letting no stone go unturned, and I started to feel like I was fishing for Largemouth instead of halibut. I actually developed a pattern of where the fish were lying, they were all sitting on the ocean side of the boilers and were only eating my baits on the pause. I ended up getting 5 fish for the morning, no legals though. It was a good day, just not what I am used to when fishing for Halibut, normally I just go out and cast and dont pay too much attention to the details, but today I really needed to in order to even get bit. As for Bryan's side of the story, he lost a fish or two but never got one to the boat, but he did snag a nice little shark to add some excitement. Hopefully next time I go I wont have to think as hard...because I'm not so sure I like thinking when it comes to halibut fishing.! :) Oh well.
