7273, Palomar knot strength for dropshot variation? Posted by fongster, Thu Dec-12-02 11:18 AM
I was wondering how strong the knot is if you tie a jig to the tag end where the weight would normally go. If you hook a fish on the jig, is the knot strong enough to be pulled hard from the tag end--would it break or cut itself? I would not necessarily be passing the tag back thru the above-hook's eye like normal to make it ride up and straight (unless it's better/stronger with this set-up). Thanks.

I do it all the time David, good way to pinpoint fish, a body shad up top, with a small jig on the bottom, I would suggest using some stiff line though, BTW----> thanx for the info on the grub-fishing!!!

Aaron Martens actually uses a San Diego knot for his drop shotting...

David,
During the Finnseeker halibut tournament once we exhausted our supply of pre-tied fishtraps (trap rigs) we started tying them using palomar knots and tying the treble (trap) to the tag end. Caught a few fish this way including a huge leopard shark (on the trap hook) and it held up pretty good. The flourocarbon was iffy and was causing some heartache but once I dumped that and started using mono I had no problems.

were you passing the tag back thru the eye like for dropshotting or just letting it hang normal? would a uniknot work ok too (my standard knot I tie)?
