i went to the main lake at Shadow cliffs today with my dad. my plan was to no throw anything but the castaic trout and some swimbaits. I decided to do a bit of trollin and i let my dad use one of my swimbaits. And as we trolled over a little point , my dad bumbed the bottom , and it suck a little , as it shot out of the rock it was somewhat hung on , a fish hit and we wound it up , and it was a 5lb 2 oz. it was the only fish of the day, but it was a good one

can anyone tell if that is a florida or norther strain bass? me and ryan were not sure. rob, do u know?

I was asking about this on ncbf a while back. I could swear the fish are floridas, because they look a lot like other florida fish I have seen. However, some guys on ncbf said they were definitely northerns. I really don't know for sure. I guess the lake record is only 12 lbs or so which would kind of make you think they are northerns. You would think if they were floridas they would be giant like in chabot and san pablo.

Jon Walton said there was a florida population , but not a big enough florida pop. to creat as many 10+ as pablo or chabot. But Me and jono were just wondering about that specific fish. it doesnt quit have the entire looks of a florida. it almost seems like a trout eating northern instead.

That would make sense what Walton said. That fish looks pretty northern-ish to me too, a lot like the fish in Margarita which is a definite all Northern strain bass lake. Northern or Florida, they all love trouts.

yea it does look like a northern to me too. is there any definate way to tell? or is it all guess work. not that it really matters, i'll take either one.

I think there's something having to with the eyes or something. True floridas have solid black eyes while northerns have gold rimmed eyes, or something like that. Try asking John Lake on the Bass-N-Tubes board, I think I heard him say something like that.
