Saturday marked the first WON team tourney of the year for John and I. We came down late Friday night and woke up to heavy fog that formed up more and more as the sun tried to come out. 52 boats blasted off at 5mph and we opted to stay close and fish some stuff just across from the marina. John cranked a keeper spot right away on the wiggle wart. He followed that up with a couple dinks but the first hour was pretty darn slow, which was to become indicative of our entire day. When the fog lifted enough we ran to Las Tablas and threw the wiggle wart some more. I caught another keeper spot on the wiggle and John hit a slightly better fish a brown/purple jig nearby. We were looking for quality with the cranks and the jigs but the bites were just awful far between. After picking around in Las Tablas for a while we came back to the bank where we caught the two fish earlier and John gets another keeper on the wiggle way out off the bank. 4 fish in the boat, and it was already 11am or so. We hit some main lake stuff and worked our way back towards the marina. Caught a couple minnows but no size. Finally around 2pm John connects with number 5 on a 2" reaper and I culled an ounce or two a minute later drop shotting an Assalt worm. That was it for the day. At Naci you need one better fish in your sack and our best was only 1.6, John's jig fish. I don't know where we placed but we weighed 6.31lbs. I think 8.9 won it with a 2.9 big fish. There might have been some better bags after that, I don't know for sure. It sounded like jigs might have been getting the better fish, but I sure couldn't make anything happen on the jig. Pretty tuff bite for us by Naci standards. I don't know what was happening for everyone else.

I do know that after weigh ins I still wanted to rip some lip, so I twisted John's arm ( it took about 2 seconds ) and we grabbed our 6lb setups and walked down to the marina cove. Needless to say it was wide open. John destroyed them on the reaper with 11 keepers in 45 minutes including 2 smallies. I continued to stink it up and only caught 3 keepers on the baby brush hog. I guess they weren't in a feeding mood all day, so that last hour of sunlight they decided to really snap. Fish were hitting my brush hog as I reeled it in a couple times. They sure weren't doing that during the day.

Did I mention that I forgot my sleeping bag and had to sleep with all my clothes on? NO, probably I didn't mention that. And you also didn't hear that I left a message for Brian to bring me up a sleeping bag on Saturday morning but he didn't get it. Oh and I probably forgot to say that the trailer had no HEAT the first night, so yeah basically that sucked. But Brian came up and hung out and Pete and Susanne from Wilderness Outfitters stopped by to pick up some computer stuff from me, so it was a regular party on Saturday night which cheered me up from the tuff fishing.

Sunday John let me and Brian take the boat out and harass the marina fish again in the fog. We caught 5 on dropshot and brush hog pretty quick. John came out and we ran around by the dam a little. I think we each had one keeper and John had 2 dinks. 2" reaper for John, drop shot for Brian, and I finally caught one on an Assalt spider jig. About time I caught one on the jig. We had fun just bs'ing and dragging plastic. I would have liked to have been around from about 3:30 on. I bet the evening bite would have been slamming again. Forecast looks dry for a while longer. I think that could really lead to an afternoon bite not just at Naci, but all over.

You also forgot to mention the extremely loud refrigerator which would periodically turn on right next to my head while I was trying to sleep. Oh yeah, and you didn't mention that John forgot to bring a fry pan, so he cooked hamburger meat in a sauce pan. AND, on my way home, I thought it would be a good idea to stop at Pismo and do some romping in the new truck (it was fun on the way up to the lake), and of course my clutch breaks, so that was an enormous fiasco trying to get off the beach. Did you know there's only one tow truck company that is licensed to have access to the beach, and they only take cash and aren't AAA??? Well I didn't! So, I broke my toy. Oh well, it'll be back into commission in a couple days, and the good part is it's still up by Pismo so once it's done I can pick up where I left off... But, as for the fishing, it was a good time. I love how hard spots fight on the light tackle.

Sorry guys, but I just cracked up hearing about your trip. At least you had some decent fishing. I think i'm in the running for the worst weekend too. Friday night I crashed my truck so that cancelled my fishing plans for yesterday. Today I decided i'd redeem myself and do some rockfishing in cayucous. I made a new poke pole and drove my bashed in truck up there. After 15 minutes of fishing, I broke my brand new poke pole. I walked back to my truck and realized I locked the keys in! After a little while I was able to open the rear slider window with a SPOON (hows's that for security). So that was my weekend. Not that anyone needed to hear this, but I thought i'd vent a little and maybe give someone a laugh. Besides, atleast I got to sleep in a warm bed.-Phil

Swimbait,

Shoots, that sounds like a frustrating deal on the sleeping bag. At least you and John limited out. I'll check WON to see who was there. Are you guys doing the WONdering division or the C-Coast or what?

We are fishing WONdering again this year. This was our first tourney. We're fishing all over the place, central coast 3 times, 2 at clear, 1 on the delta and probably a couple others. The non-sleeing bag action was pretty lame. I lived. Still no results on wonbass.com, but it'll be there today sometime.

Brian - that sucks about your truck. What's up with that? Were you launching that thing off jumps or something :-)

har. I decided to hold off on the jumping until I know the truck is dialed... All I did was go up one little dune, and down one not so little dune, then I charged back to the main beach to find some smaller dunes, and it went downhill from there...
