17422, Which is worse?
Posted by Mikes Z-260, Thu May-28-09 11:44 AM
Watching a 4 lbr swim away with your spro frog because your brand new 30# spiderwire broke. Watching a 6 lbr swim away with your 6" huddleston because your brand new 30# spiderwire broke. Or watching a 8+ lbr swim away with a 7" senko because your 30# spiderwire broke. All of these happened to me today. Quite pissed. Also broke off several other times with small fish in the weeds. I have never had a problem with 30# spiderwire before. Any one else have this problem? I stopped fishing and went home and ripped it off my reel. I need a line for extremely heavy cover and big fish. Any suggestions? Preferably braid or fluorocarbon. Thanks.

Mike

I had the same problem a long time ago with spiderwire. Rob suggested I use triple fish, problem solved.

Yes - 30lb braid is horrible. Braid in general is terrible because it is inconsistent. One minute you can't break it at all, the next minute it snaps for no apparent reason.

Just the other day SWMB8R told me that in the last few months, fishing with other people, he's watched $500+ worth of swimbaits get broken off on braid either casting or on fish. I haven't lost $500 worth of swimbaits ... in my life.

Good plan

Mono. Triple fish camo-escent if you want specifics. You'll get more bites because its not opaque like braid, and you'll land more of the fish because it won't break for no reason :)

Thanks Rob, I will try it out and hopefully next time be able to post a pic of those fish. At least I got to see the 6 Lbr jump and spit the huddleston about 4 feet, to bad it wasn't attached to my line still.

You mentioned frog fishing, and that is one place where I will - reluctantly - use braid. You can just walk a frog so much better on braid. I'd just go with at least 50lb braid for frogs. 65 is probably your best bet even though its a little harder to get action from the frog with.

But for swimbaits, always mono. I don't even mess with fluorocarbon except as leader material. I just want good old fashioned stretch mono so that when big bessie hits 4 feet from the side of the boat I stand a chance to get her to the net :)
