That's what I caught yesterday, at San Luis Res.
I spent Sat afternoon trying to catch shiners out of the pond on Coyote Creek, South of the Golf course. I did miserable catching 2 Suckerfish (illegal for bait), 2 Bluegill (also illegal for bait), and 1 Sculpin (probably illegal for bait). What happened to all of my beloved 6-11" Golden and Emerald Shiners?
Anyways, Sunday morning I stopped at Casa De Tourista um I meen Fruta, to buy some shad and the place that I used to buy from was CLOSED, like permanently.
Oh well, I went onto Santa Nella and got gas and found out that the bait shop there is closed too. Well without any bait I decided I'd hit the big lake and just cast lures from shore.
I went up to Romero's Overlook and saw birds working around the Points right down from there. I parked at the dirt lot to save a few hundred yards and some hard hiking. When I got down to the left hand point there were 2 guys there. One knew what the was doing and the other didn't.
The one who did caught 2 Striper while I was there, both in the 13-15# range. He said he'd caught 4 earlier and had given 1 away because it was mangled by the plug. He gave me his last fish because it was dying too with a torn out gill, and he didn't want it. The remaining 4 were released. He caught all of them on a homemade wood pencil popper with enough lead in the butt to sink slowly if not worked in.
After he left, I got my 18#r on a normal Cotton Cordel Pencil Popper, when the school pushed in extra close. It was a great fight, no jumps, but Awesome headshakes and powerful runs. When she hit, it looked like someone had pushed a body off a bridge. I released it, and it swam away as Beautiful as ever.
I think I'm going to try to make up some of those poppers like his. They threw straight and FAR. Everything I had tumbled badly, by comparison.

Tight lines,
Wade

That sounds like a lot of fun. I've heard that the big fish have been hitting spooks around the rocks to the left of the launch ramp at Dino at sunrise. Just too far of a drive for a sunrise bite for me.

Nico

PS I want to get some halibut somewhere in monterey in the next few weeks. You up to it?

The guy I met fishing for Striper said it's hot, with 8 caught Sat. I want to go!

Can you go this Saturday?

I'm still debating if I should shell out the money to fix my livewell for B-n-T on Sun.

Nice fish Wade. I would really dig catching a big striper on topwater. If I lived a little closer I would have to go check it out I think. Thanks for posting the report.
