15651, pyramid lake report

Went to pyramid this morning and threw different trout plugs for almost all of the day. there were shad all over the launch ramp area and we saw a few big boils, including a large striper chacing a trout in about 2 feet of water. I started off throwing the 9" castaic rainbow trout plug until the tail got loose. i switched to a trout colored 7" osprey but the knot on my spectra slipped in about 2 casts so i was stuck using an all white osprey for the rest of the day. my set up was a calcutta250 with straight 30lb test Spiderwire (i think its EZ cast or "smooth" spectra/braid, not sure the exact name) in green. the reel was matched with a 8' GLoomis backbouncing rod. The rod is nice for most swimbaits but it felt as though it was a little to light for the castaic plug, even though it was casting it just fine. Im still looking for some action on the big swimbaits, havent even got bit yet... I took a break form the swimbait and fished for trout. i snapped one off and caught another on half an orange lip ripper on a 1/64th jighead. my other two friends that were with me caught one each also. those two were caught on powerbait and a yellow panther martin. the fish were pretty large, up to 2.5 lbs. before going home my friend decided to fish the powerplant and farmed a fish on a 1/4 or 1/2 ounce all white bucktail on 10lb test. He also got a warning by the sheriff for trespassing.

Nice report, thanks. Don't get discouraged throwing the big stuff, seeing fish chasing trout is always exciting to see but it's disapointing when you don't hook up. Those fish are so keyed in and focused on what they are doing it's tough to get them to bite, I have done better blind casting and catching fish rather than casting to boils.

i wanted to edit my post but i guess i cant... well anyway, i meant to say that i was using Spiderwire Stealth, it had slipped my mind at that time but now i remember it.

as for throwing the swimbaits, ive only put in about 10 hours (with the majority of that being from this trip) so im not discouraged yet, it's actually quite fun throwing them. and im still building my collection so thats fun also. I might head out tommarow and throw some more swimbaits, along with a few bucktails too.
