Fished the mighty Otay yesterday with Cameron. It's been a while since I did any freshwater bassin!!

Anyway, we struggled for a few fish all day. Got some worm fish off the ledges, but they weren't great quality or numbers. I missed a good fish on the jerkbait in the middle of a blow-up! Shoots. Cameron got a chaser to eat a spoon on a spinning rod...nice fish...almost 3lbs.

Other than the occasional blow-ups, the fish were hard to find. I flipped and pitched all day! Nothing! The water is real high, and the fish don't seem to be relating to anything we could find. Maybe the high water's got 'em pushed way back in the no man's land of the tules? The grass is growing, but doesn't seem as thick as years' past...

Got back in time to do some partying in San Clemente. Not bad.

Nice report, Matt! We did the calico thing the morning of the fourth, the calis were chewing the black Blams good- tried for the tails off the Domes, no takers for the kind mini macs we got from Strands- they were suicidal this time last year at San-O. The makos dogged us all afternoon outside, insane conditions, warmest water we metered was 71.9!!! That is warm- They got YFT at the 43, we should score soon- Did you get that stinkin goat at West Reef yet? LOL- Red tide kind of sucks on the inside, but the bass didn't seem to care. I'm going to chase the freshwater bass this weekend at Oso and LMV- hopefully tails by Sunday!!

Yeah Bassnet,

I haven't got that big ol' sheepie off the west reef yet. I attempted to launch the Toad Hunter off North Beach, and swamped her...so I haven't made it out to her yet...

The conditions have been ultra feral lately. The ocean temp is a trip. The waves have been hovering in the mid 60s, I didn't realize the outside is warmer...

Good luck gettin' on 'em this weekend. Let us know how you fare.

Matt

LAST EDITED ON Jul-06-01 AT 07:23 PM (PST)

Change in plans for me- my 13 year old cousin who I was planning to take bass fishing wants to fish the saltwater, so we will be rubbing elbows with 60 other fishermen on the twilight boat out of Dana- should be a good calico bite, seems the evening boat has been fishing the calicos off Creek instead of the puss bellies, that's cool with me- I'll be playing deckhand for the grom, but might soak a mac for one of those fat seabass that have been terrorizing the local kelp bed lately. I think we're going to load up some gas cans and charge the 43 Sunday, getting sick of chasing the missing local tails while hearing guys on the radio complain that they only have 10 or 12 albies on the boat- The bite down south sounds like it is just getting better, better grade of fish, the guys running outside are killing it! Tight lines!

P.S.- we ran through 71.9 degree water right off 204 Wednesday, it was a red tide, I'm sure the surface temp was much warmer cause of the sun on the dark water, but it is getting warm!
