Going to Lopez for a weekend of camping and fishing. I haven't been there for a while and was wondering if anyone could fill me in on conditons there...water level, temp, etc.

Thanks

Ken,

The water is very low right now. About 10ft lower than it was last summer. Some winter huh? Water temp is about 63-68. Visibility was only 2-3ft last time I was there a week ago.

I've gotten some fish on spinnerbaits, rip baits and senkos although I don't throw that stuff very much. Haven't had a sniff on trout baits.

I'm taking a friend out on Wednsday for a small fish trip. I'll let you know how I do.

Ken a guy from my bass club was there last Friday and said the water level was really low. He said the water temp was around 68 degrees and the fishing was not as good as he thought it would be. He caught 2 fish in the 5-6lb range but all the others were dinky things. But let us know how you do because I want to make a trip up there with the family.

Phil/Jeff,
Thanks for the reports. I guess that low water levels are going to be something we Central Coasters are going to have to put up with this year, they say that Santa Margarita's only open boat ramp should close sometime this summer. I guess that will give us a kickboat, kayak only lake this fall!!
Let me know how you do Phil and I'll post when I get back, I should be camping and fishing this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

I called there today because I had to add to my reservation for my camping trip in July...
Well anyways, The guy told me that the fishing is tough but the bass are active in the Arroyo Grande Arm...
He said that once the shad start to spawn the bass bite will be wide open on shad...
He also stated that when the crawdad's begin to spawn that the bass will be active as well...
I was surprised to get this answer because every year when I call to get reservations the girls just say "yeah the fish are biting on worms" then they don't know anything else after that...
This guy was very informative...
He told me that water temp was at 68 degrees and the bass were moving to secondary points...
He did state that the water level is lower than ever but that the lake plans on adding water in mid May...
He said that the SLOPOST (San Luis Obispo Parks Open Space & Trails Foundation) was going to have the Coca-Cola Company donate funds to the lake as well to help out in this time of need...
Well I hope this was helpful to you guys...
I am just relaying what I was told though...

Hey Ken,

Just got back from Lopez. We had a really good day out there boating about a dozen fish. Biggest was around 5lbs. White spinnerbaits around the rocks were the ticket.
