Craig(Mr.Bizark) and I decided to do a little trout fishing. It's been a couple of seasons since we fished local freshwater and by all the recent posts, Irvine seem to be the place.
Launched our boat about 645am. and there seemed to be a light crowd.(Maybe the news of the wind?) Started off trolling CD-5's in Blk/Gld and FT down off the west shore. As soon as we made the right to go along the dam..First trout of the season is hooked (not too bad considering we've only had our lines in about 5 min.)It was in the rod I was holding. At first it didn't feel too big, but once it new it was hooked the fight was on! This fish made severl runs about 10-15yds. Finally got the fish to the boat and Craig nets it. This was a toad!! (to me :P ) Weighed close to 6lbs. It was nice to finally catch a decent size and very nice looking fish out of local waters. I've always managed to catch lots of trout, but mostly 1-2lbs. Moved to the flats and caught a couple on the threaded nightcrawler. Then the wind really kicked up and made bait fishing difficult, so we decided to troll again. This time we trolled around the red cliff area and picked up a few here and there. All in all a good start to the trout season.

Ciao,
Don

Total count(fished from 645am-1pm)
13 All rainbows
Biggest 6lbs, the rest 1-2lbs
All execpt two(nightcrawler) caught on trolled CD-3&5 (blk/gld was the only color that got fish)

CD's are Rapala's "CoundDown" lures. They basically sink, instead of float.

Greeper,
Yes, I varied the speed as much as possible. Sometimes we would get a hit as soon as I stopped the motor. Also moving the rod back and fourth to give a little more action to the lure helped.

Good luck,
Don
