Hey Dave, I took my girlfriend who was also a first timer on Aug. 7th to Big Bear and I'll tell you what it is very slow right now. They have planted cats since then so maybe you'll have some luck. The hot spot for cats is suposeddly in the Stanield Marsh on the east end using Mackerel. There is shore fishing there, in boulder bay and near the dam on the west end. That is where it is deepest. You can get more info at Big Bear.com if you haven't already. Also I remember reading a report from a guy who had a lot of luck with spinnerbaits for largemouth near the boulder bay shore fishing area. I think you can read his report at fishinghotpage.com as far as camping I have never done it there but it's located on the north shore I think. I'll never forget the first time my dad took me fishing. I hope your trip with your nephew is just as special. Good luck. Also get info on renting a boat at pineknotlanding.com or bigbearmarina.com
