17897, June 20, 2010 - Delta WON Bass

Nico and I decided to hit up the WON Bass Delta team tourney today for no particular reason. We went as observers for the Elite series in March but neither of us have fished out there this year (always make excuses up front :) ).

It was a real nice day after many days of wind. We ran pretty far north in the morning and fished around. I farmed a frog bite and a swimbait bite, nothing big. Made another run and camped out for the rest of the short 6 hour day of fishing.

Water was 68-69 deg and decent clarity to 4 feet. Caught some rats cranking, then started to see some bedfish. First good fish we saw on a bed was over 8lbs. We fished it for... over an hour. It never bit, very frustrating.

Wound up seeing a bunch more nice fish on or relating to beds but they were incredibly smart. Not sure why? Delta bedfish are weird critters. These fish didn't act like normal bedfish. We fished hard for a bunch more 5lb plus fish but had no love. I wound up getting 3 keepers on a small swimbait and Nico had I think 3 bedfish, all males. So we sucked, and weighed in 11lbs. Don't know what won, had to head home for father's day stuff.

There was a nice opportunity today for us to bring in a 20-30lb sack but it just didn't happen. I don't know what these fish are doing spawning in June anyway. Strange year.
