15482, Piru Lake 8/12-14

Spent the weekend camping, fishing & partying with 40+ close friends & family. Had an awesome time with all the kids & vow to do more of this while mine is still young. Ate like kings & manged to clear the freezer from any remnants of the previous lobster season as well as putting a dent in the fish supply. Not that Piru was greedy with her plentiful supply of 12" stocker rainbows with about 1 out of 4 being a beautiful 15" holdover with pink meat. I put over 30 trout in the boat in 5 different 1.5-2.5 hr. trolling sessions with various kids, everyone wanted and got a turn. Most were released, only keeping 3 or so a day that were hooked bad & joined some eggs on the grill. My father & I actually only caught 1 fish each, but had an awesome time playing guide. The mornings & evenings were WFO between 25' & 40' using downriggers & leadcore, it was a slow pick the one time we fished during the mid-day. That time was spent lounging & playing in the 78 deg water. The fish bit the trap-rigged 3" Big Hammers, Needlefish & Pinz Minnows equally well but when you get a short strike on the hard baits the fish don't come back. When they hit the soft rubber bait they come back & hit it over & over until they stick, good fun!
